Wichita: City of Contrasts

GRADE 7   Early Wichita

Developed in partnership with local teachers to provide a Wichita focus to the Kansas history unit, this participatory tour offers students an opportunity to encounter authentic artifacts and historical characters from early Wichita. An introductory videotape, exhibit tour, and object identification game engage the students in discussion of the issues facing early Wichitans. During the tour each student adopts the viewpoint of a specific Wichita citizen of 1874, and these contrasting opinions are further developed back in the classroom when the students hold a town hall meeting to discuss issues still current in their community. (Duration: 1 hour, 15 minutes)
