A Wichita Cottage: Victorian Etiquette. The class tours the rooms of a recreated 1890 house, emphasizing the manners expected of children at that time. Kitchen activities include using an apple peeler and a crimping iron. Grade 5
A Wichita Cottage: Decorative Arts. The rooms of a typical Wichita home of 1890 are explained in terms of the design and decoration in fashion at that time. Hands-on kitchen activities offer a chance to use an apple peeler and coffee grinder. Grade 6
A Wichita Cottage: Energy of Yesteryear. This tour of the seven-room exhibit features the fuels, forms of energy, and function of the mechanical systems of an 1890 Wichita house. Grade 7
Wichita: City of Contrasts. On this tour each student adopts the viewpoint of a specific Wichita citizen of 1874. An object identification activity contrasts the cultures of the Wichita Indians, early settlers, and modern Wichitans. Grades 4-8
Grasslands The Wichita Cottage and Magic City exhibits illustrate the settings and characters in Grasslands, Debra Seely's novel for young readers. Reading or listening to the book and participating in the lesson activites and museum tour builds language arts, social studies, and math skills.
